Happily unschooling in northern Germany.
My friend in Bremen, whose two sons don't want to go to school, received three letters from the educational authorities yesterday. One was the rejection of their application for exemption from school attendance. The other two were notifications, one for her and one for her husband, of coercive fines of €1 500 each. If these are not paid they will have to go to jail.

A mother of four with a really mixed-up background that really has people here in Germany scratching their heads but would be common for most Americans. I'm half Irish, half Italian, born in England, grew up in South Africa with my Irish mother and my adoptive father, who was originally from Austria. My dh is half Dutch (on his father's side), the other half a similar cultural hodgepodge to my heritage, including liberal dollops of Welsh and a touch of German. My poor children really have no cultural heritage except that which we carry around with us and the layers which are added in the various places we have lived.
